Customer Audits / Visits

Amgen visit – 5 visitors from this biotech customer visited the Fraser site on May 24th. Most comments were favorable. They really like our product. “It’s the best product out there”. They would like to see improvements that would control excess water in the plant, and that DMV considers developing a comprehensive contingency plan. The plan should not only include back up manufacturing capabilities, but also tactics to ensure continuity of raw material supplies.

The following day, May 25th, two auditors from Ross Products performed our re-certification audit. The comments from the auditors were extremely favorable. Both auditors performed the last audit (2004) and notice big improvements. The facility was very clean, and they liked the fact we are establishing hygiene zones w/ air-locks. The only negative comment had to do with the housekeeping in the cooler/freezer.

The next scheduled customer audit will be June 14th. The QA manager for Oxoid, and one of his customers will be performing a facility and quality systems audit.

Q Squared Pancake Breakfast Meetings

Our Q2 lunch meetings took a different twist (or should I say flip) this time. The Q2 team treated employees to a delicious pancake breakfast featuring plain and blueberry pancakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice, milk and some great locally produced maple syrup (thanks Paul Aikin). Many good ideas were brought up and discussed at these meetings. A common opportunity for improvement regarding technical training of the operations group was mentioned at all three meetings. The fact that much of the manufacturing equipment PLC controlled new operators do not have the need to make manual adjustments – and thus may not know the intricacies behind the equipment. The technical training (a.k.a. “DMV U”, like PSU or dare I say OSU) would provide greater knowledge to our employees, helping them to have a better in depth understanding of each unit of operation.

Weekly Meetings - Striving to achieve operational excellence

On September 13, 2006 employee meetings were held in the South conference room. The topic of discussion was one of our core Q2 messages; Striving to achieve operational excellence. These were some of the best meetings I have been to – a lot of good discussions took place. Individuals shared their ideas on what operational excellence means to them. We talked about many examples of operational excellence. Suggestions for continual improvement were made – and will be followed up. When everyone works together – great things happen!

Striving to achieve operational excellence.

This is one of our core Q2 objectives. What does it really mean? In order to secure our continued success DMV has to maintain its production efficiencies and continually improve. How will we accomplish this? By using our resources (people, processes, equipment, systems) in such a way as to consistently produce top quality products the first time, every time. Who is involved? Everyone. Everyone needs to know how to do their job – then have the pride and determination to do it right – every time. Everyone needs to look at their jobs, (the work they do, the equipment & systems they use on a daily basis) for Ideas for improvement. These improvement ideas are necessary to achieve operational excellence.
